[ it doesn't give her a concrete idea on what to do, but it does help. weiss is kind of bad at talking too, but she says what's on her mind. she can make this work. maybe. ]
[ He knows Atsushi very well, but even so he doesn't always know how to cheer him up. Moreover, he wasn't expecting Weiss of all people to call him a good friend. ]
I try to be. Atsushi deserves good friends. Like you.
[ En's not really sure he believes Weiss calling him a good friend. She, and pretty much all of Verens think he can't be bothered to do anything. Which is his own fault. But it's hard to see how someone like him can be thought of like that and still be a "good" friend. ]
Being around you really makes him happy, and from what I heard, the two of you had a nice time together cooking spaghetti.
[ see, here's the thing. weiss isn't the type to say things she doesn't mean. en might not believe weiss, but she was being sincere. atsushi has talked about en before and it did leave a bad impression on weiss, but en talking about how well he knows atsushi-- it's not something she's really heard before. she's never really seen anybody talk about their friend like that, or show concern for their friend like that.
but weiss is also somebody who didn't have many friends growing up. the dynamics in her relationship with rwby is a lot different, too. maybe she's wrong, or maybe she's right--nobody can really tell. she does see en in a different light now, though. and things that happened the night when she got here make more sense now. ]
I wouldn't say I'm a good friend. Not yet, anyway. I never had a lot of them, so interacting with... "friends" [ the airquotes in her words is so obvious in her tone. ] can be a challenge.
[ there's a lengthy pause on her end before she continues. ]
And. . . I wanted to ask if you wanted to be friends, too.
[ For En, Atsushi is essentially the very oxygen he breathes. Without Atsushi, En would feel like the world is suffocating him 24/7. They don't do a lot of actual activities together, but rather they do different activities sitting next to each other... and it's nice. There's a silent and perfect understanding between the two of them.
But he's never really had friends beyond Atsushi. Even the rest of the Earth Defense Club is... well, he supposes they just sort of became friends because they had to. He never really disliked any of them, but he's pretty sure that even though Io and Ryuu were "in the club" a while before they became Battle Lovers, they would have probably stayed acquaintances if none of them had become... magical boys.
So while he's surprised to hear Weiss ask him directly if he wants to be her friend... despite thinking it's a weird thing to ask, he's not actually sure how the majority of friendships are supposed to start. Asking certainly would be easier. It's certainly something Atsushi would do. ]
Ah....
[ Even so, how does one respond to that? Is there a Friendship Handbook out there somewhere that he's missed? ...If there is one, he probably wouldn't read it anyway. He'd need a more condensed version. Like a comic. Friendship Comic. ]
I... think that would be nice?
[ ...That was a dumb answer, wasn't it? ]
At the very least, I'd like to be friends with you.
[ it's unorthodox to ask somebody to be their friend, but it's not like weiss knows any better. letting somebody in and being friends are two different things to her. she hasn't opened up to anybody here in this place, but she has met a lot of people whom she gets along with. the latter are friends! and the former are... well, she doesn't know what those kinds of people are, yet. she's never really had the opportunity to open up, not that she wants to. she'll probably do it if asked, though, but it's not something she'd openly talk about.
en's response perks her up, though. he can't see it, but she smiles, and even laughs a little. ]
Great. Then— Oh! I know I can be a bit much, so just tell me if I am and I'll tone it down.
[ This almost seems like a business transaction...!! ]
Ah, well, I can do that. I don't think I'll need to, but I'll let you know if you become a little "much."
[ Although En and Atsushi are best friends, they're also pretty much polar opposites in almost everything. So while Atsushi has a tendency to be passive and keep his his problems locked away from everyone, En is more than willing to tell people exactly how he feels. Keeping those things locked up seems like too much of a burden for En.
And, he can handle Yumoto. If he can do that, he can be friends with Weiss. He hopes. If he had to pick someone here who wasn't from his world to be his friend, it would be her, so. ]
And in return, you can tell me when I'm being unfair with workloads.
[ Although she kind of already has, but that's okay. Sometimes he needs to be kicked in the ass to realize he's being too lazy. ]
[ it might just be one!! and these are agreeable terms. even if... there shouldn't be terms to friendship, to begin with. weiss is trying! ]
I'll do just that.
[ now it's become awkward, so weiss is going to ollie out. ]
Anyway, I'm sorry for disturbing you. It would be a lot easier if I could. . . send a text first, or something before doing this. [ she does have her scroll with her but what is reception... besides, she's not even sure if she can text or call people from other worlds using a device from remnant. ]
[ He was only taking a nap, but he's not going to actually admit that. She already probably thinks he's the reincarnation of a sloth, after all. ]
I don't need a warning text that you're about to contact me. You can just tell me whatever you want. But if you'd rather do that next time, that's also fine.
[ And En figures he should extend the same courtesy to her. ]
But... yeah. See you around.
[ FOR THAT COOKING PARTY? He hopes Weiss hasn't forgotten because En certainly hasn't. ]

Thank you. That helps.
[ and after a short pause: ]
You're a good friend, En.
